2017 will mark the 40th anniversary of the "Star Wars" franchise, and a report from Collider announces that the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain is going to release the original trilogy films, "A New Hope," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" this coming August and beyond.
According to the report, tickets will be available on ReturnoftheTrilogy.com starting May 4, which many fans commemorate as "May the Fourth Be With You" or "Star Wars Day." A full list of places and schedules for the re-release of the films is available on the Alamo Drafthouse website.
The report also points out that the version of the films will be the 1997 "Special Editions" and not the 1977, 1980 and 1983 original versions. The "Special Editions" have seen a few changes and special effects altered but not as much when compared to the DVD re-release and Blu-Ray releases of the films, which have a significant amount of alterations.
It is also pointed out that the films will be shown back-to-back, meaning fans coming into the theaters should be ready for a long marathon of the three films being shown one right after the other. This has been done in the past for the "Star Wars" films and for other franchises such as "Indiana Jones" and the original "Planet of the Apes" series.
The report also reveals that dressing up in "Star Wars" costumes is being encouraged and that there will be several celebrations and events being held in between the screening of each film to further celebrate the four decades that the franchise has been around.
According to Cinema Blend, this will be a good opportunity for the younger generations to watch the original trilogy given that Lucasfilm and Disney are adamant on reviving the franchise with the new sequel trilogy that began with last year's "The Force Awakens."
