There have been five "Spider-Man" movies to date and they all featured some of the more classic villains from Spider-Man's rogue gallery such as Venom, Sandman, Electro, Doctor Octopus, and three different versions of the Green Goblin. The new reboot, however, may focus on villains that haven't been featured on the big screen.
In an interview with BirthMoviesDeath, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stated, "That's the advantage," in reference to Spider-Man's rich rogue gallery filled with many different villains. "Right now we're interested in seeing villains we haven't seen before."
This ensures that the new films under the Sony and Marvel deal won't just repeat what audiences already saw before. Both companies have confirmed back in February that the new "Spider-Man" film won't be an origin tale and now, with new villains in the picture, it appears that this will indeed be a fresh new take on the superhero.
None of the past films have featured other iconic villains such as Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Vulture, or even Black Cat who oftentimes is portrayed in the comics as a villain but also as Spider-Man's love interest whenever he's not with Gwen Stacy or Mary Jane Watson.
Feige also explained that the villains will not be the only concentration and source of conflict in the new movies. He said that since the new films wil be set in high school with Peter Parker as a teenager, a part of its strengths and drama will come from strong supporting characters and the average day to day life of a high school student. He likened this sort of everyday issues to films by John Hughes, the man behind movies like "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club," and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."
"Just as we hadn't seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven't seen a John Hughes movie in a long time," he said. "Not that we can make a John Hughes movie — only John Hughes could — but we're inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven't done before excites us."
Spider-Man will make his first appearance in next year's "Captain America: Civil War" and will get a solo film scheduled for July 28, 2017.
