With the ongoing rumors that Apple and Samsung will release 12-inch tablets early next year, Sony is allegedly jumping on the bandwagon and will release its own mammoth device in the first half of 2015. According to Taiwanese media, DigiTimes, the tablet will head into mass production shortly.
The report said that the 12.9-inch tablet will aim for the high-end market and will sport a price tag of over $1,000. Sony raised the white flag in the PC market, but it has not given up on the tablet segment yet and the company reportedly plans to aggressively start the new year with a bang by releasing the massive tablet.
The supposed specs and features of the 12.9-inch Sony tablet are: 12.9-inch with 4K or 3840 x 2400 resolution display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor that could either be the 805 or 810 chipset, and an 8-megapixel camera. The tablet will be 8.6 mm thick.
DigiTimes' sources, reportedly from a supply chain, also revealed that the preparation of some of the components needed for the device is already finished. Thus, mass production is the only thing left to do. The tablet will be manufactured by Pegatron Technology, which is the same manufacturer of Apple's iPad and Microsoft's Surface tablets.
Other reports claim that the 13-inch slate will be named Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet. Chinese tech website PadNews published a spec sheet of the said tablet. According to the spec sheet, the tablet will boast the following features:
- 12.97 inches Triluminos IPS display with X-Reality engine and 3840 x 2400 pixels resolution
- 2.86 GHz Snapdragon 810 processor from Qualcomm
- 6 GB RAM
- 64 GB internal storage
- 12,100 mAh battery capacity
- PS4 Remote Play feature
- 8-megapixel camera with 1/2.3″ Exmor RS sensor with f/1.8 Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* lens
- Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system
The Chinese media also claimed that the device will be released next month at the Consumers Electronics Show 2015 alongside other Sony Xperia Z4 devices, namely the Xperia Z4, the Xperia Z4 Compact, the Xperia Z4 Ultra (phablet), and a regular 10-inch Xperia Z4 tablet.
