'Sonic the Hedgehog' game 2016: Sonic Team confirms new game in development

It was previously reported that the official Twitter account for "Sonic the Hedgehog" teased a brand-new game, although it did not make any official announcements. Sega and Sonic Team also did not make any announcements during this year's E3. However, the developers have now come out to confirm that a game is indeed coming out soon.

In an interview with Famitsu (via Soah City), game director Takashi Iizuka explained what the developers are planning for the future of the franchise and the 25th anniversary, which is being celebrated this year. He also gave insight into some of the other projects not related to video games.

"We at Sonic Team are developing a completely new game, as well as developing a full movie actively done by Sony Pictures, and animation on Sonic Boom," he explained. "The most important thing is not the fact that the series survived for 25 years, but how many games were developed. Our goal is to add something new and overcome any potential hardships."

According to Iizuka, fans will get a first-hand look at the new game and other projects from Sonic Team during this year's San Diego Comic-Con where Sonic Team will give a special presentation as part of the franchises' anniversary celebration.

It is pointed out in a report from Gamespot that the developers may be working on a game other than the new title they are currently promoting.

Other than a brand new game, the developers also teased that if the fans demanded it they may work on releasing an anniversary edition of the classic games. This may include an HD remake for the first three original titles, sporting re-worked graphics and additional features.

The last major game in the series, not counting the spin-off "Sonic Boom" titles, was "Sonic Lost World" back in 2013. A PC port was launched in 2015.
