'Sonic the Hedgehog' 2016 game news: Sega to unveil it during 25th anniversary celebrations?

"Sonic the Hedgehog" games have not gained critical praises in recent years, particularly with the poor reviews for "Sonic the Hedgehog" 2006 and "Sonic Boom." However, the official "Sonic" Twitter account, run by Aaron Webber, has released a new teaser indicating that the developers are set to release a brand new game soon.

The franchise started as far back as 1991 when the first game released on the Sega Genesis (known as the Mega Drive in Europe). According to a report from Gamespot, it is possible that the developers will unveil the new game during the series' twenty-fifth year anniversary celebration, which will be held this summer.

The Twitter post's caption also indicates that the team is working on "something good," which indicates that it is indeed a full-pledged game and not just merchandise, a television series or a spin-off series like "Sonic Boom."

If this is proven true, it will coincide with the teaser from Twitter in which Webber reveals that the game may have been in development for some time but was never announced or released prematurely to ensure that it is as good as both the developers and fans want it to be. This will avoid rushed disasters such as the 2006 game.

The report also reiterates that Sega representatives did announce back in March that a "very special announcement" would be made during the celebration. The band Crush 40 also reportedly revealed that they were going to perform at the celebration and that Sega was working on an "anniversary" game.

While it is possible that this all points to a brand new "Sonic the Hedgehog" game, like a possible "Sonic the Hedgehog 5" or a continuation of "Sonic Colors" and "Sonic Generations," it is also speculated that it could be an HD remaster or even a full remake of the classic Sega Genesis games.
