"Scandal" season 4 ended with Melody (Bellamy Young) being kicked out of the White House, with Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) coming in just in time. At the end of the finale, it was only Pope and President Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) left standing together, although according to series creator Shonda Rhimes, everything is going to change.

The promotional trailer shows Fitz finally handing in the divorce papers, which indicates he and Pope might finally be getting together for the fifth season. Furthermore, as stated in a previous report, the fifth season will see the reconstitution of the Gladiators after the fourth season focused heavily on Pope's personal story arc.

However, Rhimes stated in a report from Entertainment Weekly that all of this might change.

"Olivia finds that every single thing about her life has changed in unexpected ways," Rhimes explained, and the report indicates that not all the changes might be a good thing. This could hint at trouble coming Pope's way as she gets with Fitz, and there may also be issues within Olivia Pope and Associates as well.

Speaking to Yahoo! TV, Kerry Washington explained that some of the changes and directions they've taken in season 5 were also quite surprising to the cast.

"It's not what I thought it was going to be," the actress stated. "Tony Goldwyn had the same reaction. But it's fun."

Washington's statements indicate that while the trailer shows Fitz handing in divorce papers, it may not necessarily mean Fitz and Pope will actually be getting together. In the same report, Goldwyn explained that Fitz wants nothing more than to be with Olivia but there is the fact that the president is still maried to Melody, who was just kicked out of the White House.

The first episode has already aired and it introduced newcomer Elizabeth North, but it appears that the Gladiators will be stepping up their game to protect Pope when she needs it the most.

"Scandal" season 5 episode 2 airs this Oct. 1.
