The Samsung Galaxy S7 is nearing its expected release date, with a report from the Korea Herald hinting that it may launch in January or February 2016. According to the report, the S7 that will be available at launch will utilize the Exynos 8890 chipset while a more powerful unit will come out later, bearing the Snapdragon 820.
The Exynos 8890 will be Samsung's first customized chipset from the U.K.-based processor developer ARM. Qualcomm and Apple have been developing their own ARM-based chipsets for some time which means Samsung won't be treading into dangerously new grounds.
No matter how well the Exynos 8890 performs, Samsung is still reportedly quite adamant about using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 on the Galaxy S7. The Snapdragon 820, according to TechRadar, will solve the overheating issue that has plagued recent Samsung Galaxy devices, particularly the S6 and its variants.
Geek Snack reports that the Exynos 8890 version of the Samsung Galaxy S7 will be released in Asia and Europe while the Galaxy S7 equipped with the Snapdragon 820 will release in the United States some time after, once the Snapdragon 820 is ready for mass production.
This would allow the Exynos 8890 version to prosper in Asian and European territories without having to compete with the Snapdragon 820 version and vice versa.
A report from Forbes also explains that the differences in chipset won't be the only difference in Samsung Galaxy S7 models. When the phone releases early next year, it is also said to release in three different variants: the regular Galaxy S7, a Galaxy S7 Edge and a Galaxy S7 Plus.
However, the report does cite one concern. According to Forbes, the release of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Plus comes only six months following the release of the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and that this could lead to negative feedback from consumers.
Consumers might be more hesitant to buy a new Samsung if they know their new purchase will be rendered obsolete in less than a year.
