Android 4.4.2 Kitkat update for Galaxy S3 imminent after Sprint push out; Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 won't get update

Latest reports claimed that Samsung Galaxy S3 will receive the Android 4.4.2 Kitkat OS update this month.

Android Geeks claimed that the South Korean company will push the latest firmware to users by the end of this month. This is not the first time that rumors that Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4.2 update will be released, but until now, the new firmware was nowhere to be found.

Android Geeks said that some of the improvements that Android 4.4.2 update will bring are: "transparent status bar, white status bar icons, full screen album art in the lock screen, immersive mode, cloud printing, new Location Menu, color emoji support, or better power management, along with updated Samsung native apps, improved Samsung Keyboard, lock screen camera shortcut, and bug fixes."

Meanwhile, U.S. carrier Sprint started rolling out the official Android 4.4 Kitkat OS upgrade to its Galaxy S3 handset after the update was spotted on Sprint's website on a User Agent Profile. Sprint has been prompt when it comes to OS updates of its devices.

The carrier was the first one to provide upgrade for its Samsung Galaxy Note 3. It is expected that other major networks will follow suit although other carriers has not announced their plans or the release date of their own OS update.

However, SamMobile reported that not all Galaxy S3 models will receive the latest Kitkat update. The report stated that Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 will not receive a software update due to unresolved problems.

Moreover, Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 was released two years ago. Google and mobile manufacturers were following the 18-month software support on each device. This means that devices that are older than 18 months will no longer receive an OS update.

Lastly, the infinite delay in the roll out of Kitkat update could be due to the incompatibility of Galaxy S3 hardware to the requirements of the update. This issue is attributed to the low virtual memory of Galaxy S3 compared to its brothers, Galaxy S4 and Note 3.
