Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 vs. Apple Watch: Unique features from the latest smartwatches

With the highly anticipated Apple Watch finally unveiled, a couple of details have already been made known about the touch screen device.The tech giant has made it clear that the Watch will need an iPhone for it to be fully functional – these can be any model from the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

However, thanks to Siri, there is no need for users to pull out their phones whenever there a new notification pops up.

The device also runs on a customer S1SiP (System in Package) chip and comes with a GPS, accelerometer, heart-rate sensor, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The Apple Watch has also been said to support third-party apps, including Nike, Facebook and Twitter, as the company as announced at the launching event. An API will also be made available to app creators for them to gain access to the Watch's features.

The touchscreen gadget has also been integrated with sapphire lenses and watch sensors for the user's pulse to be detected by means of infrared and visible light. Its dial will also allow the individual to scroll up and down the watch's interface, go over the apps, and return to the home screen.

With the release of such a device, tech enthusiasts cannot help but compare it with the Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch from Samsung in terms of specs, features and design.

The Galaxy Gear 2 comes with a 1.0 GHz dual-core Exynos 3250 system-on-chip, 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal memory. Similar to the Apple Watch, the Galaxy Gear 2 also needs to be paired with a compatible device, although it has a standalone music player.

Samsung's dust-and-water-resistant offering provides an extensive range of options and features, which include: making calls, theme customization, photo and video capture, real-time information from the fitness manager, among others.

The company released the Galaxy Gear 2 last April whereas the first in the series, the Galaxy Gear, was unveiled in September 2013.

While the Apple Watch is being offered at a starting price of $349, Samsung has made the Galaxy Gear 2 available for $299.
