'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' spoilers, news: New trailer teases Darth Vader and more plot points

Darth Vader as seen in the trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Lucasfilm

Lucasfilm and Disney have released the second official trailer for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," and a report from The Verge has dissected the footage to discover as many hidden clues and indications of what the film will actually be about. Most importantly, the trailer confirms the return of one key villain: Darth Vader.

As stated in the report, a portion of the trailer again reiterates the aspect of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) being a criminal who is hired by the Rebellion to steal the Death Star plans. The report further states that Jyn was chosen likely due to the fact she is the daughter of Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) who is described as a scientist working with the Death Star construction.

Diego Luna's character, Captain Cassian Andor, is heard speaking for the first time and it appears he will be the first person to go alongside Jyn as they travel the galaxy looking for allies to join them in raiding the Death Star. It is also shown in the trailer that much of the film will take place on a planet Jedha, which is a "holy land" for the Jedi is where they go to make their lightsabers.

Because of this, the planet is crawling with the forces of the Empire but it is also inhabited by characters such as Donnie Yen's Chirrut Imwe, a person who is not a Jedi but is sensitive to the Force and may be able to manipulate it similar to a Jedi.

Other hidden details include the new U-Wing fighter ships, the Death Star causing a solar eclipse and a closer look at the robot K-2SO, voiced by Alan Tudyk.

At the very end of the trailer Darth Vader is shown and the report points out that it appears he is staring at a targeting display within the Death Star. It is noted to be similar to the targeting system seen in "Star Wars: A New Hope."

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" opens in theaters on Dec. 16.
