'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' news: Daisy Ridley shoots down rumors regarding Rey and Jyn Erso

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Jyn Erso Lucasfilm

Ever since the release of the first trailer for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," fans have been quick to speculate and post their theories regarding the story and characters. One of the most popular theories is that Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is the biological mother of Rey (Daisy Ridley) -- a rumor that Ridley has officially shot down in an inteview with MTV.

"I'm not being funny, you guys, but just because she's white and got brown hair, it doesn't mean she's my mom," the actress explained. "I think the amazing thing about 'Episode VII' is that Finn (John Boyega) and Rey don't come from anywhere, and they find a place. So to me, it's funny that people think it's so important because I don't really think it is."

In a general overview, "The Force Awakens" occurs roughly 30 years after "Return of the Jedi." "Rogue One" takes place years before "Return of the Jedi," presumably a few months before "A New Hope," which already makes it a little unlikely for Jyn Erso and Rey to be related.

There is also the fact that last year, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy explained that the main episodic films of the "Star Wars" series focus entirely on the Skywalker family, hinting that Rey may be related to Luke or Leia (Carrie Fisher). The spin-off films, on the other hand, don't need to be so severely tied to the Skywalkers as they serve to tell a broader story, focusing on events and characters that happen elsewhere.

In the interview with MTV, Ridley does hint that there is a chance she is Leia's daughter, which would make Kylo Ren aka Ben Solo (Adam Driver) her brother. She explains that Leia has been shown to be Force-sensitive, particularly in "The Empire Strikes Back" but did not pursue the life of a Jedi and became a general for the Resistance.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" opens in theaters Dec. 15.
