'Prometheus' 2 news: Film's official title is 'Alien: Covenant'; official plot released

Alien: Covenant 20th Century Fox

Ridley Scott's "Prometheus 2" was rumored to be titled "Alien: Paradise Lost" but according to a report from Collider, this is no longer the case. 20th Century Fox has since officially revealed the film's basic plot synopsis and that the sequel will now be titled "Alien: Covenant."

It will be a sequel to "Prometheus" and will be the middle entry in a trilogy of films that will serve as the backbone prequel that will eventually tie in to the 1977 "Alien" film, which was also directed by Ridley Scott.

The synopsis for "Alien: Covenant" reads:

"Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world - whose sole inhabitant is the 'synthetic' David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition."

The synopsis reveals that the "Covenant" in the film's title is a reference to the ship that the main cast of characters will be arriving in, similar to the previous film's "Prometheus." However, the more intriguing detail from this synopsis is that it makes no mention of Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace).

"Prometheus" ended with Shaw and David being the only survivors of the ship Prometheus and they took one of the alien Engineers' spaceships, hoping to reach their home planet and discover why the Engineers created mankind only to one day destroy them.

There is no indication in the synopsis to tell how much time has passed between the two films and it remains a mystery as to why only David survived. There is also no hint as to how or why the android is now located in a dangerous new world instead of the Engineer home planet, their original destination.

"Alien: Covenant" is scheduled to begin production in 2016 and will release in theaters by 2017.
