'Power Rangers' release date, movie plot spoilers: characters revealed

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Saban Entertainment

The upcoming "Power Rangers" movie, to be directed by Dean Israelite, is set to be a reboot that harkens back to the "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" seasons that kickstarted the franchise back in the 1990s. A new report from Collider gives more details as well as the names of the titular Rangers in the film.

According to the report, all of the five Power Rangers will be seventeen-year old teenagers and they will be based on the original five members of the television series: Jason, Kimberly, Trini, Zack, and Billy. The report also confirms that they will have the same basic traits as the characters in the TV series, albeit with some changes.

Jason is described as a former football star who lost his dreams after a car accident that injured his knee. He is still described as the leader of the Power Rangers. Kimberly, on the other hand, is still the popular girl but now with a rebel-against-all attitude as she tries to hide what happened during her 6-month abscence from school.

Trini is a loner since her parents move often due to work; Zack is a charming ladies-man who brags about himself except for the fact he lives in a trailer park; while Billy is a quick-wit genius who doesn't fit into any social group due to his awkwardness but "gravitates" toward Jason.

As pointed out in a report from Screen Rant, these character descriptions are still a rumor as neither Saban Entertainment — the company which owns the brand — nor Israelite has confirmed any of the information. However, the names are most likely to be true given that the film is meant as a reboot of the franchise and not a continuation of the series.

Casting has yet to be announced and the film hasn't hit production yet so these descriptions are still open to change when the cameras start rolling and new ideas pour in.

"Power Rangers" is scheduled to be released in theaters on Jan. 13, 2017.
