PlayStation 5 release date: PS5 rumored to be the last Sony console

The Playstation 4 is entering its third year since release and there are already talks of the Playstation 5. However, the console is not expected to release until late 2019 or 2020, and according to a report from Day Herald it is possible that the next console could be the last.

According to the report, the biggest threat to the console lineup isn't the competition from the Xbox Two or the Nintendo NX. Instead, it is expected that Sony will halt working on consoles in order to prioritize on the PlayStation VR, formerly known as Project Morpheus.

The PlayStation VR is currently being designed to work with the PlayStation 4, although it is speculated that by the next generation of consoles the VR technology might be integrated with the system, becoming the primary mode of gameplay instead of the traditional hand-held controller set-up.

It is further speculated that if the PlayStation 5 were to survive, it should launch instead as a top-box for televisions, similar to the top-boxes used for network television streaming. It was previously reported that the Playstation 5 might go disc-free, and if it does then a top-box design would minimize production and retail costs.

Should the PlayStation 5 utilize purely digital release of video game titles instead of using physical discs while at the same time trumping the current power of the PlayStation, 4 it will require a far more advanced build. According to the report, the chipset for the upcoming console is rumored to be designed by none other than AMD.

AMD was also responsible for the chipset used for the currernt PlayStation 4. While there are no confirmations from either Sony or AMD concerning the development of the PlayStation 5, these should still be taken as rumors until proven otherwise.

As it stands, the PlayStation 5 is expected to release by 2019 or 202 with VR technology integrated into it.
