'Pitch Perfect 3' sequel release date still years off

Pitch Perfect 2 Universal Pictures

"Pitch Perfect 2" has exploded into a massive success, earning a current worldwide box office of over $291 million from a $29 million budget, beating the likes of "Mad Max: Fury Road" and even "Avengers: Age of Ultron" on its opening weekend. A sequel is very likely but according to actress and "Pitch Perfect 2" director Elizabeth Banks, it may still take a few years to get the gears going.

According to a report from Den of Geek, actress Rebel Wilson has already signed on to reprise her role as Patricia "Fat Amy" and was even open to the idea of a "Fat Amy" spin-off project if the studios ever decide to move forward with one. However, as of the time of writing, she is the only member of the cast to sign on for a sequel.

Lead actress Anna Kendrick was not so fast to jump the gun for "Pitch Perfect 3."

In a recent interview with TIME magazine, the actress stated, "I'm not one to count my chickens, so I just want to see how this one does and find out if there's an appetite for that before I even think about it. I'll drive myself crazy."

One actress is anxious to move forward and the other is still waiting to see how the second film does over all. To date, the sequel has done tremendously better than the original "Pitch Perfect," which was still a big success. The 2012 original had a budget of $17 million but went on to earn over $115.4 million worldwide.

Seeing how the second film nearly trippled that amount in less than three weeks, it comes as no surprise that the studios are getting ready to sign a third film. However, as of the time of writing, "Pitch Perfect 3" has not yet been green lit by Universal Pictures.

According to a report from Access Hollywood, Banks explained that it might take some time before the next film in the franchise gets going.

"We're thinking about it, we're thinking about it very seriously," Banks explained. "Of course we're at the very beginning of that process. We would love to spend more time with these characters that everyone's fallen so hard in love with."
