Oculus Rift vs PlayStation VR: Specs, features and game comparison

 Sony

Virtual reality gaming is becoming a reality with the introduction of devices such as the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR. While the devices may all seem similar, they are quite different and cater to different crowds. A more in-depth comparison has been given through a report from Trusted Reviews.

It is pointed out that that the Oculus Rift is more designed for PC gamers while the PlayStation VR is obviously more for console gamers, specifically PS4 owners. The choice of games between the two may be similar in recent years, as more PC games come to consoles, but there are subtle differences between the two VR devices.

According to the report, both have a decent and comfortable headset design but the Oculus Rift's screen does boast a higher-rated 1080x1200 display per each eye while the PlayStation VR offers 960x1080 per eye but it does come with an HD OLED display.

Oculus Rift Oculus VR

One area where the PlayStation VR immediately beats the Oculus Rift is that it comes with an accessory right out of the box. This unique little box allows the player to connect the VR headset to a television's HDMI port, allowing other people to see what the person is playing.

The PlayStation VR requires the PlayStation Camera but this will be bundled with the VR headset. Playing games will require the PlayStation Move controllers while other VR games will require the PS4 Dual Shock controllers. The Oculus Rift, on the other hand, has its own pair of VR-ready controllers which may feel more natural for VR games.

According to the report, the PlayStation VR is by far a more affordable choice. It costs less than the Oculus Rift and it is instantly compatible with the PS4. The Oculus Rift is more expensive by approximately $200 and it requires a very powerful PC to run. Building a powerful PC can cost far more than a brand-new PS4.

It is further explained that for the time being the PlayStation VR also has the advantage with its games given that a lot of PS4 games are now being developed with VR compatibility.
