'Street Fighter V' new combat mechanics revealed: details

Street Fighter V - Ryu vs Chun-Li Capcom

Capcom and Sony just released new information regarding the combat mechanics of the upcoming game, "Street Fighter V." Gone is the revenge meter and in its place is the Variable system, measured by the V-Gauge.

According to the official post by Sony, there are three different mechanics tied to the V-Gauge, namely V-Skill, V-Trigger, and V-Reversal. It explains that each character will have completely different variables so the V-Skill, V-Trigger and V-Reversal for Ryu will be completely different from those for Chun-Li or Nash.

The V-Skill is accessed by hitting medium punch and medium kick simultaneously. This is the only variable that doesn't require the V-Gauge. Some V-Skills can help fill the V-Gauge faster. For other characters, it may provide temporary boosts in strength, skills, or speed.

For instance, Ryu's V-Skill is known as "Mind's Eye." This variable skill allows him to parry attacks similar to the parry system in "Street Fighter III." Only Ryu can parry, however, since every character in the roster has a different V-Skill.

The V-Trigger is a charcter's unique ability that may help players turn the tide of battle and is somewhat similar to the Ultras from "Street Fighter IV." The V-Trigger uses a full V-Gauge bar and can be accessed by hitting the heavy punch and heavy kick buttons together.

V-Triggers are in two stages. A good example is to look at Ryu's V-Trigger known as "Denjin Renki." With this triggered, Ryu's fists are surrounded by electricity and his Hadokens, EX Hadoken, and Shinkuu Hadoken all gain a powerful electrical charge, making them faster, stronger, and with higher stun chances.

V-Reversals, on the other hand, require only one stock of the V-Gauge and are meant to be a counterattack while blocking. The reversals vary from character to character so while one might use this to switch places with their attacker, for another character it might be used to push their attacker back a few steps.

Along with the V-Gauge is the EX Gauge which builds up as players deal more damage to their opponent.

"Street Fighter V" is scheduled for a March 2016 release on the PlayStation 4.
