The highly anticipated addition to the "Mortal Kombat" franchise has finally been fully in the works since this August. "Mortal Kombat X" is the long-awaited sequel to the widely popular 2011 reboot, and has now been shown to fans worldwide with its official trailer.

As the clip was released, gamers have gotten a sneak peek at the return of previous characters and the addition of new ones. Naturally, Scorpion and Sub-Zero made it to the official list while majority of the other names in the lineup are new.

One of the leaked updates for the "Mortal Kombat X" characters had been from Bernard Beneteau, senior artist of NetherRealm Studios. In a blog post, Beneteau presented a concept relating to Ermac, the former red ninja who became a follower of Shao Kahn and a Legion of Souls.

However, due to the fact that the blog post had been dated last February, a couple of months before the actual "Mortal Kombat X" was announced at E3, it remains uncertain whether such concept will be included in the upcoming game.

Another possible character in the lineup for the "Mortal Kombat" sequel is Smoke. He has been known to be a Lin Kui ninja and was seen in IGN's demo of Mortal Kombat X.

"Smoke on the other hand is allegedly seen on Kotal Khan's Sun God fighting style tab at the IGN demo of the game," news site Christian Post commented on Smoke's IGN appearance. "It would look as if Kotal Khan is holding up some grey ninja, ready to beat him to a pulp. Unless it's just some random grey placeholder to show off Kotal Khan's skills, it could quite possibly be indeed Smoke."

Also joining the list of playable characters are familiar fighters who have been featured in previous "Mortal Kombat" games. These include Raiden, Kano, and Goro. All of these returning characters are expected to undergo a major high-definition overhaul as well as exhibit new looks and fighting techniques, although they are to retain their classic influence and appeal.

While the appearance of a wide range of characters remains unconfirmed, more details are expected to be announced, especially with the upcoming "Mortal Kombat X" to be released in 2015.
