Miguel Cotto next fight could be a rematch with Canelo Alvarez prior to retirement

Miguel Cotto was stripped of the WBC title just prior to his fight against Canelo Alvarez due to his refusal to pay a $300,000 sanctioning fee, states Boxing Junkie. He was later forced to pay a $800,000 set-aside fee to Gennady Golovkin in order to fight Alvarez, only to lose the said fight. This may force the boxer to retire.

According to the report, Cotto avoided the media entirely after Alvarez won the fight via decision and by a large margin too. The boxer merely headed straight to his locker room and was never heard from again, sparking talks of Cotto retiring.

However, Cotto's coach, the legendary Freddie Roach, hinted that there may be room yet for one more fight and that it may be a rematch between Cotto and Alvarez.

"I think he has a future, a couple more fights in him, but we're getting close to the end. He's had a good career. I'd like to see a rematch, but we'll see. It was a very competitive fight, and good for boxing for sure," Roach explained. "That's definitely an option we will pursue. We did have trouble backing him up."

Roach also stated that during the fight, Cotto weighed in at 159 pounds and assumed Alvarez was at 175 pounds, giving the latter an advantage in the fight.

According to the report, Cotto himself stated prior to the match that he didn't have many fights left in him, going as far as to say he most likely had just one left. It is likely his next match may be against Alvarez a second time if the boxer has not already decided to just quit and retire.

Freddie Roach also explained that he will have a lengthy talk with Cotto regarding retirement. He explained that while Cotto was still a hardworking boxer at the gym, he did acknowledge that when a boxer's career is over it's time to hang up the towel.
