'Kingdom Hearts 3' updates: Mobile prequel title 'Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ' finally released

Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ Square-Enix

"Kingdom Hearts 3" is still months away from being released but Square-Enix has finally launched the main prequel title, "Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ," for iOS and Android devices in North America. As stated in a report from Kotaku, the game's plot is a crucial piece that ties in directly to the third main entry in the series.

As stated by the report, the game's plot involves the war between five different factions. The story takes place years before the pivotal Keyblade War and focuses on the conflict between Light and Darkness. It is this conflict that creates the current layout of the worlds and universe of the "Kingdom Hearts" games.

Despite being set in a world prior to the Keyblade War, many Disney and "Final Fantasy" characters will be making an appearance in the game. Many of the promotional photos have showcased worlds and characters from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves."

The game uses a simple tap-and-slide mechanic for its travel and combat. It is possible to summon heroes from the "Kingdom Hearts" universe such as Sora and many of the supporting Disney or "Final Fantasy" characters.

How the game ties into "Kingdom Hearts 3" is undetermined at this point, however. Many fans speculate that the events prior to the Keyblade War and the events of the Keyblade War itself, a story told in "Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep," will be the main anchors of the story in "Kingdom Hearts 3."

"Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ" initially released in Japan as a browser-only video game before it was developed for mobile devices and to be ported over to North America. The mobile version of the game does support microtransactions, although these are optional and are not required to proceed and finish the game. In-game currencies can be acquired simply by playing the game.

A launch trailer has been released by Square-Enix, which can be viewed below.
