Warner Bros. Pictures' growing DC Extended Universe so far includes Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, and there are speculations that Jena Malone will be playing Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." According to a report from Latino-Review, the DCEU might be adding the Black Canary to the big screen.
The report states there are plans of including Black Canary in "Justice League Part One" and/or "Justice League Part Two." It is also stated that if the character is received well by audiences, Black Canary may then move forward with a "Birds of Prey" film, which puts together DC's female superheroes such as Black Canary, Batgirl and Huntress.
At this point there are two actresses already rumored to be vying for the role. The first is model Abbey Lee, who proved her acting skills in this year's "Mad Max: Fury Road" where she portrayed The Dag. She will be seen later on in "Gods of Egypt" and in "The Neon Demon."
The second actress the studios are reportedly looking into is Alona Tal. Tal's acting resume is considerably longer than Lee's but most of her career has been on television shows such as "Hand of God," "Supernatural" and "Veronica Mars." Her biggest cinematic role was back in 2013 with "Broken City."
In the DC comics, Black Canary was originally Dinah Drake but the mantle was later passed on to her daughter Dinah Laurel Lance, who still wears the costume to this date. Black Canary is a powerful martial artist and uses a special "Canary Cry" ability, a sonic scream that can disable enemies and even break weapons.
To date, several actresses have portrayed the Black Canary on the small screen, particularly Lori Loughlin and Rachel Skarsten in the 2002 series "Birds of Prey" and then by Alaina Huffman in "Smallville." Most recently the character was portrayed by Caity Lotz and later Katie Cassidy in the CW series "Arrow."
"Justice League Part One" will release in 2017 with "Part Two" following up in 2019.
