'Jessica Jones' season 2 spoilers: Side characters will play major role in story

"Jessica Jones" season 1 focused primarily on introducing the titular character, played by Krysten Ritter, while still shedding the spotlight on some of the side characters. However, in an interview with the Nerdist, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg revealed that season 2 will grow to focus on the supporting characters.

"That's the trick of a show called 'Jessica Jones.' If she's not in the scene, it's not a guarantee that scene will end up in the final picture," Rosenberg explained. "You have to earn secondary character stories. You have to flesh them out enough so they can eventually carry stories of their own, which is very much what season one was about."

Rosenberg continued to explain that her goal in season 2 was to allow Jessica Jones a little time off, allowing the character to rest while some of the focus was shifted to her supporting cast. This would allow the show to build up on the stories of the characters around Jessica Jones, akin to how "Daredevil" built on its side characters like Foggy (Elden Henson).

As stated in a report from Cinema Blend, this may allow the show to focus on the story of Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor). In the original comic books, Walker eventually becomes the superhero known as Hellcat. It may also continue building on the relationship Jessica Jones has with other heroes such as Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Luke Cage (Mike Colter).

The report also points out that this change in focus should not come as a big surprise given that the studios have used the same technique before.

"Daredevil" season 1 focused entirely on the titular hero, giving only a few moments on its side characters and villain, while season 2 devoted much more time on characters like Foggy, Karen (Deborah Ann Woll), Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Elektra (Elodie Yung).

"Jessica Jones" season 2 will begin production after filming wraps for "The Defenders."
