French site Consomac has reported about a set of configuration files found in the latest beta of OS X El Capitan, Apple's new desktop OS, indicating that there is an unreleased iMac in the works with built-in 4K resolution. According to a report from Apple Insider, it is likely that the 21.5-inch iMac will get the 4K resolution upgrade.

Further implying that the device in the configuration files is an iMac is the icon which is allegedly for an iMac. However, AppleInsider could not verify if the information is accurate.

If the 21.5-inch iMac does get an upgrade, it will sport a resolution of 218 ppi, which is comparable to the larger 27-inch iMac which sports 5K resolution. The report also states that if there is a new iMac in development, it may have the option to scale its resolution up to 5K. This will be a significant update, particularly for their non-Retina iMac line-up.

Apple has not released a new non-Retina iMac for two years now, with the only significant release being the 27-inch Retina-display iMac last October. Aside from the 27-inch iMac release, the most recent update that the line-up had is its minor price drop.

AppleInsider also points out that this is the second time that a new Apple device was hinted at within the configuration files of the new OS. A previous report pointed at a new multi-touch Bluetooth remote. KGI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo also stated in a report that Apple is planning on releasing a new iMac device soon.

Apple is set to unveil a multitude of devices this September, as reported by CNBC via Twitter. If a new iMac is indeed being developed, then it is likely that the company will debut the desktop during the said event, alongside the alleged iPad Pro and new iPhone devices.
