Square Enix has announced with the launch of a new teaser trailer that "I Am Setsuna" will launch for the PS4 and PC this coming July 19 for both North America and Europe. The game already launched for the PS Vita and PS4 in Japan back in February. The PC version will be available for gamers via Steam.
"I Am Setsuna" will be the first game officially developed by Tokyo RPG Factory, one of Square Enix's smaller studios that cite older video games as their primary sources of inspiration. As stated in a report from Polygon, the company has called out the 1995 classic "Chrono Trigger" as their main inspiration and that the new game will echo some of the elements that made "Chrono Trigger" a success.
Unfortunately, the teaser trailer gives little to no information regarding the game's main plot or mechanics. The voice-over dialogue is very vague but the very end of the teaser does confirm the July 19 release schedule.
To clarify the game's story and design, Square Enix has released an official synopsis for "I Am Setsuna," which reads:
"'I Am Setsuna' tells the sorrowful story of Setsuna, a young woman of incredible inner strength, and the sacrifice she must undertake to the save the people of her land. Players will be immersed in an emotional and unforgettable story of true bravery as Setsuna leaves her hometown with her bodyguards on a journey to the farthest land."
It is also revealed that the name of her bodyguard is Endir and that this will be the main playable character, with Setsuna designed as an NPC ally of sorts.
Several photos reveal that the combat does appear to be reminiscent of "Chrono Trigger," with the option to execute combination strikes with allies in the party. There is also a combo move titled "X-Strike," similar to the move made in "Chrono Trigger" when a player uses Frog and Chrono in the same party.
