'Homeland' season 6 release date, spoilers: no premiere until January 2017; plot centers on Brooklyn

Claire Danes as Carrie Showtime

"Homeland" season 6 has been confirmed and as stated by a report from TV by the Numbers, it will shift from its fall 2016 premiere to a January 2017 premiere. Unfortunately, a specific premiere date has yet to be released but the report does reveal that production will begin this August and will see Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) back in the U.S.

According to the report, the sixth season will take place several months after the season 5 finale, which saw Claire stop a terrorist threat in Berlin. She will now be back in the U.S., living in Brooklyn where she now works for a foundation that helps Muslims living in the United States.

This will be a far cry from her previous work for the CIA and her duty as a personal security officer in season 5. However, the more obvious change is the political scenery as the report also points out that the entirety of season 6 takes place during the U.S. presidential elections.

"''Homeland' is a show that's constantly reinventing itself," explained Showtime CEO David Nevins. "It's not on a straight character trajectory path. It's changing season to season. More than most, it's a show that has an open-ended expiration date because of the subject matter."

It is surmised that the plot of season 6 will take place between election day and the presidential inauguration. The season is said to focus on the tension between the transitioning of power from the current U.S. president to the up-and-coming president-elect.

Given that Carrie is described as a foundation worker aiding Muslim residents and citizens, it is speculated that the season will have a strong focus on immigration rights and the fear many have regarding immigrants and foreign threats invading the country.

It is unknown at this point if Quinn (Rupert Friend) will be returning given how the season 5 finale played out but even if the character is confirmed dead the actor may still return for flashbacks and other sequences. His involvement has yet to be confirmed once filming for season 6 begins.
