A lot of people ridiculed the design of the Google Glass. Among other things, it was lopsided with the main computer hanging on only one side. However, a report from Quartz indicates that the device might be getting a redesign based on a design patent recently awarded to Google.
The tech giant pulled out the original Google Glass from shelves this January, and it appears that the company went back to the drawing board to redesign the device in order to make it both aesthetically pleasing and functional.
As pointed out by the report from Quartz, the design patent indicates that the next Google Glass will resemble Oakley's reading glasses. This means they still won't be as fashionable as some people hope but they will be much more pleasing to look at compared to the initial design. The new design now sports glass lenses on both sides and a slightly wider frame. However, the design does not indicate where the electronic parts will be placed, which means they could still be re-allocated on the device.
Quartz also reported that Google obtained a patent for a "wearable display" device which might allow people who require glasses to wear the Google Glass even without a prescription. This will help the device gain traction for people who immediately dismiss its function.
The report also points out that since January, Google has been awarded 45 different design patents for a wearable device so it is possible that any of these might be used for the next iteration of the Google Glass. According to Wired, it is also possible that Google might release different versions of the device and each one might sport a different design and function.
Google has not yet given any comment on the design patents or any of the company's plans for the Google Glass.
