"Frozen 2" is currently in production, and according to a report from Movie Web, fans are demanding that Disney give Princess Elsa (Idina Menzel) a girlfriend, flooding social media sites with the hashtag "GiveElsaaGirlfriend."
According to the report, Disney is already under fire for failing the Studio Responsibility Index. This index, governed by GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination), annually monitors how well movie and television studios represent the LGBT community in their films and shows.
The index revealed that of the 12 major films released by Disney in 2015, which included several Marvel films and the new "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," not one featured a gay or lesbian character in a major or minor role. Paramount Pictures is also receiving criticisms for failing to meet the index's standards as well.
In response to this, fans have been asking for "Star Wars: Episode VIII" and "Frozen 2" to feature characters that can strongly represent the LGBT community. Princess Elsa is the most popular candidate given that she did not end up with a male romantic partner in the first movie.
There have been rumors of Elsa being lesbian ever since the first movie came out, and as reiterated in a report from The Bitbag, the creative team behind "Frozen" are open to representing the LGBT community in their films. It is likely they will be aiming to teach children that there is nothing wrong with being gay or lesbian by using Elsa as a prime example.
"When the kids watch them, they watch them over and over again, and if we don't have a decent message in there, I think we've missed an opportunity," explained co-director Chris Buck.
"Frozen 2" has no confirmed release date but it will be released by 2018. According to a report from Telegraph, Disney has three other films to release first, one of which is the highly anticipated movie "Moana."
