'Frozen 2' movie release date, news: Idina Menzel apologizes for false hope

"Frozen" was a massive hit and Disney continues to earn through its merchandise. There's just something about Anna and Elsa that kids and adults love. So when the news of a sequel came out, everyone got so excited about it, even singer/actress Idina Menzel herself.

In an interview with The Telegraph two months ago, Menzel, who lent her voice to the Snow Queen, said that the "Frozen" sequel and stage musical are "all in the works." She followed that up by saying that she's not part of the stage show.

"I don't know what will happen with that -- but the movie hopefully. We'll see. I'm just going along for the ride," she said.

Consequently, everyone took Menzel's word for it and believed that "Frozen 2" is going to happen for sure. However, Menzel had to retract her statement last week.

The Toronto Sun got a hold of Menzel's statement to Britain's The Times where she said, "Apparently I spoke out of turn. I just assumed because it was so successful there'd be a sequel. I think they're working on [a stage show] but the Disney people keep things close to their chests."

"Frozen" is Disney's fifth-highest grossing film. According to The LA Times, the company's revenue totaled to $1.379 billion and most of that came from the merchandise.

On the other hand, while there's no confirmation that there will indeed be a "Frozen" sequel, fans should be happy to know that the short film is ready to go this March.

"Frozen Fever" is a seven-minute short film that will be shown right before "Cinderella," scheduled to hit theaters this March 13. The story revolves around Anna's birthday party which Elsa is preparing for. Unfortunately, Elsa is suffering from a cold which causes her to lose control of her powers once again. But this time, it is unintentional.
