The "Fast and Furious" films have always had a fast-paced story with a strong focus on stunt work and this became more apparent in the past three entries in the franchise.
However, in a report from Variety, "Fast and Furious 8" director F. Gary Gray is stated to be taking a different approach for the eighth film.
Gray was responsible for the highly acclaimed 2015 feature about rap group NWA, "Straight Outta Compton." He also helmed the 2003 film "A Man Apart," in which he collaborated with "Fast and Furious" star Vin Diesel.
"We have a director who is going to bring the darkness out and bring out the character," said Diesel.
This sentiment was echoed by Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman, Jeff Shell.
"You can't keep having every movie have bigger and bigger stunts forever and ever and ever," Shell said. "Eventually you have to really focus on the story. We'll still have big stunts but bringing in this amazing storyteller is going to be great."
Story has never been the strongest point of the "Fast and Furious" films but F. Gary Gray did prove he can direct a story-heavy film with "Straight Outta Compton." It is possible his style will give the franchise the change it needs to remain on top of the game.
At this point, however, there are no leaked plot details to determine just how dark the next film will be compared to the previous seven. It is confirmed to be shot and set in New York City and actor Kurt Russell will be returning to reprise his role although to what extent is still undetermined.
Shell also said that despite the upcoming movie being the eighth installment, the franchise is still at its peak and is still a brand new title in some places around the world. The seventh film was the first to be introduced in China, Russia and in many Latin American countries. It is also the first in the franchise to earn over $1 billion worldwide.
"Fast and Furious 8" will be released on April 14, 2017.
