'Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim' release date: PS4, Xbox One and PC to get HD remaster

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition Bethesda Softworks

Bethesda Softworks has officially confirmed that "Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" will be released for the PS4, Xbox One and PC. The game's official trailer was showcased during the E3 and it confirms several rumors that have surfaced in the past, including better graphics and mods.

The video presentation was given by Todd Howards of Bethesda Softworks, the company's director and executive producer, when he stated that there is one more treat that the company has to give fans and it is one that the community has been asking for some time now.

Referred to as the "Special Edition," this newer version of the game improves on the visuals drastically and now introduces new water shaders, snow shaders, volumetric god-rays and better textures. All of these combined make the "Special Edition" a more visually appealing game and more befitting of the newer generation of consoles.

The trailer also confirms that mods will be accessible to the game, even for those playing on consoles. Mod support was previously brought to the console ports of "Fallout 4" and this will be implemented as well in "Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim."

According to IGN, PC players who have already purchased "Skyrim" and all of its DLC content on Steam will be able to upgrade to the "Special Edition" completely for free. The new edition will also be free for PC players who purchased the "Legendary Edition" on Steam.

The trailer also gives a comparison of how the game looks from its PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to the newer PS4 and Xbox One versions. In many clips the differences are quite noticeable and the game looks like it was completely remade with a new engine, despite it only being a remaster that implements improvements and newer graphical technology.

"Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- Special Edition" will launch for the PS4, Xbox One and PC this Oct. 28.

The presentation begins at the 3:00 minute mark:
