The upcoming season of "Doctor Who" will see the return of Peter Capaldi as the 12th incarnation of the time-traveling alien, along with his current traveling companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman.

As of now, the ninth season of the hit series is still filming in the U.K. ahead of its premiere this fall, but the cast and crew are about to take a breather from filming for an appearance at the Comic-Con in San Diego this week. Capaldi said that he is looking forward to the convention, telling Entertainment Weekly that it is "a great thrill to be invited along." This is the first time that the actor will make an appearance at the famous convention.

Capaldi admitted that he is very nervous about appearing in front of a lot of people at the "Doctor Who" panel, but said "if 7,000 people want to see us, it would be rude not to turn up."

EW also shared an exclusive photo from the two-part season 9 premiere.

When asked by the magazine about the photograph, Capaldi said, "The photo shows the Doctor about to make a mistake that has cataclysmic repercussions."

When pressed for more details about the premiere episode, the British actor said that it will place the Doctor in a conflict that is central to his being, "as well as containing some subtle tributes to the '60s, and truly wonderful guest performances."

One actress who is set to make a guest appearance in season 9 of "Doctor Who" is "Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams, who Capaldi described as "fantastic" and "a sharp, talented tornado."

He added that in the upcoming season, the Doctor will be in good place emotionally and will have a newfound zest for life and will be seeking for adventure, grabbing every thrill along the way. As for villains and monsters, Capaldi said that there is an "epic sweep" this season and that the villains and monsters will reflect that.

"Doctor Who" season 9 will air on the BBC in fall.
