'Destiny 2' release date, news: theme and location leaks, rumors dismissed

"Destiny 2" is currently in development, but the developers at Bungie have been silent regarding any details such as its story, setting, and gameplay. Most recently, leaks have emerged indicating that the game will now be set in Deimos, one of Mars' two moons, but now Bungie has outright debunked this.

David Candland, also known as Evil Otto to the fans of the developers, took to Twitter to immediately prove that the leaked image was fake and that "Destiny 2" was not going to be set on Mars or its moons. "What the... sigh. It's fake. Turning notifications off my phone and going back to sleep."

Because of Candland denying that the game is set in Mars or Deimos, it is possible that the game is going to be a direct sequel of sorts to the first "Destiny." This would be more practical given that the first game was set in a world so far from Earth that suddenly setting the sequel in Mars would be jarring for fans.

The only means that a Deimos or Mars setting would make sense is if "Destiny 2" is a reboot instead of a sequel.

Although it is confirmed that the game is under development, Bungie has not stated when the game is due to roll out. Given that all major "Destiny" releases have been in September, it is widely speculated that "Destiny 2" is going to launch in September 2017.

However, there are no confirmations surrounding this. Bungie executives have not even released a teaser image or trailer to indicate when the game could launch. As far as fans know, it might not be planned for release until 2018 or 2019.

Fans speculate that "Destiny 2" might even be delayed by a year or, at least, by six months in order to ensure that it is a full-blown sequel, coming with numerous improvements and new features, instead of just being too similar to the first game.
