Martin Freeman, star of "The Hobbit" films and co-star in the BBC series "Sherlock," has been cast in "Captain America: Civil War," but up to now, there is no confirmation on which character he is playing. The actor recently sat down for an interview with BadTaste and finally gave a few hints on who he is portraying in the film.
"He works for the American government," Freeman teased. "He works in conjunction with the superheroes and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes' power, I suppose. So you're not quite sure which side he's on. It looks a little bit like he's playing one game when actually he's playing another."
At first, his statements make it seem like he is allied squarely with Tony Stark aka Iron Man's (Robert Downey Jr.) camp — those who want the U.S. government to have more control over super-powered beings — but then, Freeman explained that the character isn't good or bad and might actually be more aligned with Captain America (Chris Evans) or none at all.
According to a report from Collider, it is possible that Freeman is portraying Agent Everett Ross, a member of the U.S. Senate Department and liason or ambassador to Wakanda, home of T'Challa aka Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman). He is the U.S. government's advisor on anything regarding the nation of Wakanda.
Wakanda and its most vital resource, vibranium, played a big part in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" so it is likely that Everett Ross may be the character that brings in T'Challa to the United States so that the Wakandian king can state his opinions about the matter.
Freeman did state that he may be coming back for future Marvel films. "Black Panther" is scheduled for a 2018 release, indicating that the actor may return then if he is indeed portraying Everett Ross.
A report from Slash Film also cites that the description Freeman gave might mean he is playing Henry Peter Gyrich, a government liason that is against the Avengers. The report says that this might be less likely because Gyrich appeared in the first "X-Men" film, meaning Fox might have the rights over the character.
