'Call of Duty: Black Ops 3' release: game coming to PS3 and Xbox 360

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Activision

Activision's "Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" is set to become one of the biggest first-person shooter titles for 2015 but, for the most part, it was only going to hit the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. However, according to a new announcement from Activision itself, the game is also going to be available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The game company starts off its post by making it clear that the title was designed primarily for next-gen consoles.

"However," it slides in, "we know that there are still some fans that haven't made the transition to the new console hardware, which is why we're happy to share that we're working with developers Beenox and Mercenary Technology on 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 3' for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3."

Activision continues to explain that because the last-gen hardware is not as powerful as the current generation of video game consoles, there will be some features cut off or somewhat limited. The primary example thus far is the co-op campaign — for the PS4 and Xbox One co-op is four-player but for last-gen consoles, it will be limited to just two players.

The company explains that there are other technical "features and functionality" that have been built specifically for next-gen consoles, meaning these gameplay features will not be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Some issues with the framerate and graphical limits are also to be expected.

Activision also announced that the multiplayer beta test will only be for PC and next-gen consoles.

IGN also points out that the announcement from Activision clearly states there are no plans for a Wii U version of "Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" for the time being.

Perhaps this may change but the "Call of Duty" series has never really made a strong bunker in Nintendo's corner of the gaming world anyway, so fans expect that a Wii U port will never happen. The last game in the series to hit a Nintendo console was in 2013 with "Call of Duty: Ghosts."

"Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" is scheduled for release on Nov. 6.
