'Borderlands 3' release: Gearbox confirms game, to work on it after 'Battleborn' DLC launches

Will fans see Scooter's son in "Borderlands 3"? Steam/Telltale Games/Gearbox Software

"Borderlands 3" is officially Gearbox Software's next project. During the PAX East event, CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed that after their post-launch work on "Battleborn" is complete, they'll get right to the new installment.

"It's no secret, obviously there's going to be another Borderlands," Pitchford acknowledged via (Eurogamer), although he hinted that it might not be called that way. "We don't even know if we're going to call it that. We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know," he explained.

Scott Kester will be doing art director duties for "Borderlands 3" as he did in "Battleborn" while Gearbox chief creative champion Mikey Neumann is writing the story. Neumann has already thought up of a potential character that could end up headlining the new game.

He teased that the game might feature Scooper, the son of "Tales from the Borderlands" character Scooter, but nothing is set in stone yet. Neumann explained that it only started as a concept that he played around.

Now, he wants Scooper to be part of the canon "Borderlands" story despite the character's origin coming from the episodic graphic adventure based on "Borderlands."

For now, the closest fans can get to the next "Borderlands" installment come in the form of the easter eggs in "Battleborn" DLC.

"[There are] already a lot of Borderlands easter eggs in Battleborn. But they're all from previous Borderlands games. So what if we put easter eggs for future stuff in the DLC?" he teased, with Battleborn creative director Randy Varnell seconding the motion.

With "Borderlands 3" still formless, Gearbox understandably had no release date information to offer. What's definite for now is that they will focus on DLC releases for "Battleborn" first, before they officially start the development for a new "Borderlands" iteration.

That being said, it will take a while for the title to hit the shelves. "Borderlands 2" was released back in 2012.
