'Batman vs Superman' movie plot spoilers: Wonder Woman's age, origins revealed

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman Warner Bros.

Very little is known thus far about the upcoming "Wonder Woman" solo film, but a new post via Instagram from Heroic Hollywood's El Mayimbe (Umberto Gonzales) hints that the character will be a lot older than previously believed.

According to the report, Wonder Woman will be "hundreds of years old." This would mean that the character's origins are not being taken directly from The New 52 line of the DC Comics wherein the character is in her early 20's. In the pre-New 52 era, Wonder Woman is centuries old. The only detail taken from The New 52 is that Wonder Woman is now a demigod and directly interacts with Greek gods such as Zeus and Ares.

If the report is true, then it would reinforce a previous rumor that floated last year that the "Wonder Woman" film would be a period piece set in the 1920's. The rumor stated that Wonder Woman a.k.a. Diana would leave Paradise Island, an isolated area populated by women, to find her place in the real world, which is predominantly ruled by men.

Later speculations indicated that only the first half of the film would be a period piece and would show the character's journey through the 1920's and through World War II in the early 1940's before finally reaching the modern age where she interacts with Batman and Superman.

In retrospect, this would be similar to the plot-structure used by Marvel Studios and Disney for their "Captain America" films, which started by introducing the titular character in the middle of World War II.

It is also unclear if El Mayimbe's post refers to the most recent script of the film or if it is based on an earlier draft. Ever since DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. confirmed they were doing a "Wonder Woman" film, the project had gone through several creative changes, eventually reaching a point where Michelle MacLaren left the director's chair. Patty Jenkins has since been taken in to helm the project with Gal Gadot to star in the titular role.

"Wonder Woman" will hit theaters on June 23, 2017 but the character will make an appearance first in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" which is scheduled to be released on March 25, 2016.
