LG G3 skips Android 5.0 and gets 5.0.1 Lollipop OS update

LG G3 owners under AT&T started receiving the Android 5.0.1 Lollipop OS update over-the-air. The update brings changes and improvements to the handset's functions and features.

Major U.S. carrier AT&T decided to skip the 5.0 version of the Lollipop OS and went straight to the 5.0.1 version as a gift to its users. According to Android Central, some forum members confirmed the rollout of the update that has a download size of 689.53 MB.

The rollout does not really come as a surprise since LG is one of the early adapters of the new Android updates and it already confirmed last month that Lollipop updates would be coming to the LG G3 in the U.S. "soon." This is fueled by AT&T's message that reads:

"Today AT&T launched the Android 5.0 'Lollipop' operating system for AT&T customers with an LG G3. The Lollipop update offers you a new bold and colorful interface, with new notification options, longer battery life, increased security against malware and automatic device encryption, settings for multiple device users, a new quick settings drop-down menu, better internet and blue-tooth connectivity, and voice activation even when your screen is off."

However, some LG G3 users said that they encountered issues with Google Play Services freezing up after installing the update, which is an issue common to the Lollipop updates. It seems that Google and LG have not worked out the bugs and issues spotted in the software updates.

Since its official rollout in November, Lollipop has been plagued with bugs and issues such as inability to connect to networks, battery depletion, lost data while updating over-the-air, and even inability to complete the installation due to a "missing system.img" error message. Google is undoubtedly trying to address such issues through updates such as the 5.0.1.
