After the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop OS updated Nexus devices last month, the operating system is now creeping to Google Play Edition devices. The latest Android mobile software is currently rolling out to the Google Play Editions of Sony Z Ultra and LG G Pad 8.3.
LG G Pad 8.3 is the first tablet and the second LG device to receive the new OS. In the past, LG was one of the slowest Android OEM manufacturers to roll out the latest version of Google's operating system. However, the company became serious in releasing updates earlier as this gives them an edge over their competitors and the move receives a generally favorable response from consumers.
Also, some Sony Z Ultra GPE users reported to have received notifications for Android 5.0 upgrade. Sony and Google have not announced that they are already rolling out the firmware.
Meanwhile, the HTC One M7, M8 and Samsung Galaxy S4 GPEs have not received the new Android 5.0 Lollipop OS yet. Reports say that the firmware will roll out to HTC devices this week. This was confirmed by HTC's VP of Product Management Mo Versi through a Twitter post.
Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition, on the other hand, may receive the update soon as screenshots of the beta version of the Android 5.0 for the handset were found by Samsung-centric website SamMobile. However, Samsung has yet to confirm the exact release of the upgrade.
The update is about 379 MB but users will need around 500 MB of space. The Over-The-Air update may not roll out to devices simultaneously to avoid traffic. Also, Android users are advised to have at least 50 percent battery and strong Wi-Fi connection.
Android 5.0 Lollipop OS packs a new user interface dubbed as Material Design. It also comes with improved lockscreen, security, multi-tasking features. Amidst the new features it boasts, the OS was plagued with problems, like SMS bugs and Wi-Fi issues, when it was initially rolled out to different Nexus devices.
