'10 Cloverfield Lane' news: Mary Elizabeth Winstead talks plot points

10 Cloverfield Lane Paramount Pictures

Director-producer J.J. Abrams is known for keeping a lid on his projects, from "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" to the plot of "Super 8." The same goes for "10 Cloverfield Lane," a quasi-follow-up to his 2008 flick "Cloverfield." However, actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead has now addressed some of the film's secrets.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly during the SAG Awards party, Winstead noted that they were making the film in complete secrecy and that it felt like an intimate little project given that the film focused almost entirely on just three cast members.

It was further hinted that "10 Cloverfield Lane" was filmed while the media was too busy covering news regarding "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Winstead also confirmed that no information would be leaking from the cast of "Star Wars" or from Abrams himself.

When asked how connected the film is to the original, Winstead explained that Abrams called it a "blood relative" to the first movie, which indicates that it may take place in the same world as "Cloverfield" or will at least feature a large, destructive monster wrecking havoc over the world.

Despite this, Winstead did get to reveal a little about the movie's plot, which sees her sharing screentime with actors John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr.

"It's so much about just the actors interacting with each other and that tension that builds, just all wondering if they are who they say the are, if they're telling the truth or not, and really wondering what's outside," she actress explained, giving the film a theme akin to Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs" or "The Hateful Eight."

Nothing else is known about the film. The official trailer showcases the three characters locked in a bomb shelter, and when one tries to leave she is warned about the horrors waiting outside. The poster for the film showcases a lone house and the tagline "Monsters Come in Many Forms" but doesn't showcase any characters or monsters for clues to be drawn from.

"10 Cloverfield Lane" opens in theaters this March 11.
