Xbox One Scorpio specs: release date for console expected in fall 2017

Xbox One, the current iteration available Microsoft, Xbox

During E3 Microsoft and Team Xbox unveiled both the Xbox One S, a slimmer and more affordable version of the regular Xbox One, and the Xbox One Scorpio, a more powerful unit that is meant to rival the PS4 Neo. Despite the early reveal, Xbox chief Phil Spencer recently told The Verge that the Scorpio is coming out sometime next fall.

Spencer also admitted that announcing the Scorpio this early may be surprising to some but he stated that if he were to put himself in the shoes of a consumer it would be important to get as much information about a product as soon as possible. Knowing what a product can do, how much it costs and when it launches can affect a buyer's decision.

"I want to be able to make a choice on what console I want to buy with as much information as possible," stated Spencer. "We want to give you the information to make that decision. We also want to go talk to the developers that are out there today, that are building games for next holiday, and say here's what you're going to have at your disposal on the console side."

He also confirmed that like the PS4 Neo, the Scorpio would not have exclusive games. He went on to explain that any game that runs on the slimmer Xbox One S and the Scorpio can and will run on the regular Xbox One. However, those with the more powerful Scorpio will benefit from better graphics, smoother frame rates and 4K UHD support.

Spencer's statements do suggest that the Scorpio is not going to launch until later in fall 2017, with major games launching in the months that follow. This will be a year late than the PS4 Neo, which is rumored to be released by this October, although a specific release time frame has yet to be announced.
