'X-Men: Apocalypse' trailer release date: Trailer clip to accompany 'The Martian'?

Psylocke, Apocalypse and Magneto in X-Men: Apocalypse 20th Century Fox

Production for "X-Men: Apocalypse" has officially wrapped up but no trailer has yet been released to the public. According to a report from Heroic Hollywood, the first official trailer will be attached to screenings of Ridley Scott's upcoming sci-fi film "The Martian."

"The Martian" is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on Oct. 2 and it is said that along with it will be the first trailer for the upcoming X-Men film. However, the report also states that it is very likely that the trailer will be released first online, a few days prior to its theatrical debut.

As pointed out by a report from Screen Rant, the rumor of the trailer being released alongside "The Martian" may be because both projects are produced by 20th Century Fox. Another factor that was pointed out is that the trailer will be released approximately seven months prior to the release of the film, a difference relatively similar to "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and its trailer.

It is important to note that the trailer speculated to be released alongside "The Martian" may be significantly different from the footage shown at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. The SDCC trailer was only meant to give a sneak peek at the new characters, being a quick mash-up done only after five weeks of filming and the special effects were in their early stages of production.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" takes place in the 1980s and will focus on Professor Xavier formally starting his school for mutants and forming the X-Men while also battling with En Sabah Nur aka Apocalypse, a mutant born during the ancient empires of Egypt.

The film sees the return of James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender as Professor Xavier, Mystique, and Magneto, respectively, along with the introduction of Oscar Isaac as the villain Apocalypse, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, and Olivia Munn as Psylocke.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" opens on May 27, 2016.
