Germany vs Algeria World Cup 2014 soccer

Germany and Algeria will contest what is expected to be a tense affair in Porto Alegre on Monday in the World Cup 2014 Last 16. This year is historic for the African continent as they have two teams in the Second Round for the first time. Both are facing European opposition in the Last 16 though, and will have to pull off big shocks to go through to the quarter-finals.

Today's game between Germany and Algeria will kick off at 4 p.m. EST and ill be broadcast on the ESPN network. The game will also be available to watch online through live stream – free for subscribers – via the link provided below.

It will surprise many to know that out of the two previous games between Germany and Algeria it is the African nation that has won both games. However, they were way back in 1964 (a 2-0 win), and in 1982 (a 2-1 win), and are likely to have little impact on today's proceedings.

The 2-1 win for Algeria in 1982 was the first victory by an African team over a European nation at the World Cup, and it created huge controversy. Even though Algeria defeated Germany, they eventually went on to crash out at the group stages as West Germany and Austria played out a mutually beneficial result in their final game to ensure they both went through at Algeria's expense.

That controversy has remained with the Algerian nation all the way through until the present day, and the bitter taste left in the mouth is being used as motivation for their team today to try and pull off a shock result against one of the favorites for this year's World Cup.
