In less than two weeks, Christians will be celebrating Easter. For the kids, it's all about chocolate and the Easter egg hunt. For most Christians, it marks the end of penance and Easter Sunday is of course a day to celebrate. Yes, Easter Sunday is more than the family lunch, the worship service, and the yummy chocolate eggs. If you want to know the significance of this day, read on.

When is Easter?

There is no exact date for Easter every year. This is because Easter is based on the lunar calendar (moon phases) and not the Gregorian or Julian calendars (sun cycle). But just to give you a general idea, Easter will fall on the first Sunday after the first full moon, which happens after the Spring Equinox. Usually, this date lands between March 22 and April 25. This year, Easter Sunday will fall on April 1.

What is the meaning of Easter for Christians?

Easter is a very important event in a Christian's life. It celebrates Jesus' resurrection after His crucifixion. This is so significant because Jesus died on the cross for our sins; this marked the ultimate sacrifice. During the Holy Week, we remember this sacrifice and on Easter Sunday, we celebrate how Jesus rose from the dead.

Moreover, Easter Sunday marks the end of Lent. This means that 40 days have passed since Ash Wednesday (first day of Lent). The 40 days marks Jesus' spiritual preparation where He went to the desert and fasted for 40 days and nights. Christians also make a sacrifice during Lent, whether it's a food they really like or a vice that's hard to quit.

The Lent season is considered preparation for Easter. Christians mimic Jesus' suffering during Lent and then finish it with a celebration of being able to commit to that sacrifice. But more than this, the road to Easter allows every Christian to reflect on themselves. This is the perfect time to repent of your sins and do your penance accordingly. It is the one time of the year to really focus on Jesus and your faith, so spend this time wisely and grow yourself spirituality.
