While entertainment network Fox has yet to release an announcement, fans are hoping that the thriller drama series "Wayward Pines" will be renewed for a third season.

According to a report from SlashFilm, despite "Wayward Pines" season 2 not doing as well as the premiere season, it is likely going to be renewed at least one more time to allow producer M. Night Shyamalan to finish the story, which he has reportedly envisioned as a three-season plot.

According to the report, Fox Television Group CEO Dana Walden explained during the Television Critics Association panel that even though season 2 did less favorable than season 1, it was still the highest-rated scripted show of the summer, and the executives have yet to get a final tally regarding the show's ratings.

The report points out that the way a show's ratings are calculated are no longer as simple as they were back when executives relied on the Nielson's method. Nowadays the calculation must also include the number of viewers who have seen the episodes on DVR or via online streaming services.

She did state that she already had a good idea of how well the second season fared, but she is still waiting for the results of delayed viewing audiences to get a final number.

Walden also pointed out that the first two episodes of season 2 struggled only because the show had to reboot itself, bringing in a few returning characters while also introducing the new cast, given that it took place years after the first season ended. From episode 3 onwards Walden claims that the show found its pace and stride.

With regards to season 3, she did confirm that Shyamalan and "Wayward Pines" novelist Blake Crouch have already conceived an idea for the story. She also confirmed that a few characters from season 2 may be coming back for season 3.

"They have a really compelling idea for season three that I liked very much," Walden explained. "We're definitely talking about the show right now," the CEO added.

Fans of the series will point out that the second season introduced the idea of Abbies retaining some level of intelligence and that the season 2 finale showcased an Abbie carrying a human child, hinting that the two races may merge in season 3.
