'Wayward Pines' season 2 spoilers, plot rumors: New character is a newly awakened surgeon

"Wayward Pines" season 2 will pick up shortly after the events of the season 1 finale, where a rebellion has begun to free the titular town from the First Generation teenagers who have taken control and kept all the adults frozen. However, according to a report from Deadline, the new lead character will be a newly awakened adult.

Actor Jason Patric has been confirmed to portray the character Dr. Theo Yedlin. Yedlin is described as a driven and confident surgeon with strong leadership skills.

It is further explained that when season 2 starts, Yedlin will have just woken up from his sleep and will quickly learn about the fate of the town's residents, the fact they are in the far future, and how Wayward Pines is the last civilization of mankind.

Fans speculate that at this point the rebellion may be failing. Ben Burke (Charlie Tahan), the son of the main character from season 1, may have already been captured or killed, leading Yedlin to take over as the new leader of the rebellion.

It was previously believed that the new main character may be an outsider who may have explored the world to look for other survivors or communities similar to Wayward Pines. This news of the main character coming from the cryostasis freezers in Wayward Pines automatically crushes this theory down.

However, a separate report confirms that Yedlin will not be the only adult in Wayward Pines this time around. According to TV Line, Carla Gugino has been confirmed to reprise her role as Kate Hewson. Kate was Ethan Burke's (Matt Dillon) former partner and short-time fling before she too was brought to Wayward Pines.

Kate's return may be short-lived, however, as the actress has already been cast as a season regular in the series "Roadies." It is possible her character will be the one to introduce Wayward Pines and to summarize the events of season 1 to Yedlin after he awakes.
