'Wayward Pines' season 2 renewal possible: what we know

"Wayward Pines" closed with a cliffhanger that could serve as either a series finale or a teaser to a new season. While Fox has not officially renewed the series for season 2, executive producer M. Night Shyamalan has confirmed in a report from Fox5NY that he has been speaking with the show's writers and with book author Blake Crouch.

As Shyamalan exclaimed in the report, "Wayward Pines" proved to be the number 1 scripted television program in the summer of this year and that ever since it ended, he had been asked several times if they were working on a second season.

"I've been talking with the author. I need to know the end. I'm working with the writers. If I can think of an end and work backwards then I'll do it. In TV I need to know there is an end point," Shyamalan explained.

He stated that he and Crouch have an idea on how the series could continue but did not elaborate on what that idea pertains to.

There are two uphill battles that Shyamalan and his team will face in doing a second season.

The first concern is that there are no books to base their stories on. Crouch's trilogy was covered in the show's first season although there are spin-off books that tell the adventures of Adam Hassler (Tim Griffin) which could be adapted for season 2.

[Spoiler Warning] Another concern is that the television show ended rather differently from the source material. The books ended with Agent Burke (Matt Dillon) alive and waking up even further in the future while the show ended with Burke sacrificing himself, with his son waking up to discover that the town had been taken over by the First Generation kids.

With the changed ending, the lead actors signed on for only one season and may not be available for a second one if the series gets renewed.
