While "Under the Dome" has been officially cancelled due to diminishing viewer ratings, executive producer Neal Baer revealed to TVLine that if they had been given a fourth season, they would change things up a bit. After all, season 3 ended with the dome finally lifting up, freeing the town of Chester's Mill.
Season 3's finale ended with a cliffhanger, revealing Dawn (Kylie Bunbury) finding a new egg. The season ended with the townsfolk free and with the existence of the alien threat eradicated by the government before anything could leak to the public. But Dawn's discovery could mean another place might be in danger.
Baer then stated that despite this, it would be no time at all before the heroes discover Dawn's plans and stop her. However, there were ideas thrown about for what season 4 could really focus on.
"They would have gone someplace else, and the dome would come down over another place," Baer stated. "But then it would be like, 'Then what?' Would we do the same thing again? It would have been a real challenge."
Baer also revealed that the story told in the season 3 finale was the only one they had planned. He also stated that they had already "played out" the dome setting and that they had already implemented every possible avenue they could with that setting, which may be why they ended season 3 with the dome coming off.
Of course, if the show did pick up for a fourth season, it would stray even further from the Stephen King novel that it was based on. However, Baer did explain that this was fine with King and that the author had been working closely with the series since it began.
"He's always been a wonderful voice of reflection, talking to us whenever we have questions," Baer explained with regard to King's involvement. "He's always been supportive with the fans in saying, 'It's not a rendition of the book, it's its own thing, but it has a lot of elements from the book.' He's always just been a real supportive force."
