Trump Can Still Count On Evangelical Heavyweight Eric Metaxas

Christian author, speaker and broadcaster Eric Metaxas is continuing to support Donald Trump, despite a number of fellow evangelical leaders backing away from him.

Metaxas had previously described voting for Trump, the Republican nominee for US president, as a "morally good choice".

When the news broke that Trump had been caught on video boasting about groping women, Metaxas said he would release a full statement.

He has now written an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal in which he reiterated his condemnation of Trump's remarks. However, he goes on: "But please consider this: A vote for Donald Trump is not necessarily a vote for Donald Trump himself. It is a vote for those who will be affected by the results of this election. Not to vote is to vote. God will not hold us guiltless."

Conservative theologians and leaders such as Wayne Grudem have dropped their support for Trump, while women have begun to speak out. Beth Moore became the most high profile to call out leaders who remain in Trump's camp.

Russell Moore (no relation), head of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, has once again reiterated his opposition to Trump.

Despite this, Trump retains evangelical support from the likes of Jerry Falwell Jnr, Chancellor of Liberty University in Virginia, and Metaxas. The New York-based broadcaster used German anti-Nazi pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer and British anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce in his argument for voting Trump.
