'True Detective' season 2 spoilers: Nic Pizzolatto clears up rife cast rumors

True Detective HBO

When everyone thought that they knew what to expect in the upcoming season 2 of "True Detective," showrunner Nic Pizzolatto cleared up the air and revealed that not a single rumor about the show was true.

"Literally, not a single rumor about casting that has been printed anywhere has any truth to it whatsoever. I mean that literally. I've seen entertainment reporters say 'My sources say...' There are no sources. There's me and two other guys and they don't even know what I'm doing," Nic Pizzolatto announced during a press conference at Banff World Media Festival.

Previous rumors claimed that Oscar-winning actors Brad Pitt and Matthew McConaughey will join the cast. McConaughey's casting was hinted by the actor's statement. The actor appeared in season 1 and, since then, was rumored to be a series' regular for the second season.

"That was always how I saw it. One season, eight episodes, a finite beginning, middle and end, goodbye, look forward to watching it. If HBO had wanted an option on me for a Season 2 or 3, I wouldn't have done it. I wouldn't have walked into something where they could say, 'We've got you for the next three year," McConaughey said to Deadline.

However, Nic neither confirmed nor denied the rumors. "I've talked to one person about it, possibly, and that has been it. We haven't cast anybody. I have a secret list and that's it. There is a strong (lead) female character," said Pizzolatto, adding, "But I wouldn't say it is female-led or anything like that."

Of course, everyone was dying to know who was in Nic's secret list and it is unlikely that Nic will reveal it anytime soon. It was initially speculated that Maggie (Michelle Monaghan) was offered a lead character in the second season of "True Detective", but other reports stated that Jessica Chastain was cast to be one of the female leads next season.
