"Transformers: Age of Extinction" wasn't exactly well-received by critics, but on the upside, it did gross more than $1 billion worldwide, which is really not bad at all. However, seeing that the critics didn't particularly like the movie, many are questioning the future of the "Transformers" franchise.
Reports of director Michael Bay not returning to direct "Transformers 5" didn't help at all. Additionally, many also assumed that with Bay gone, lead actor Mark Wahlberg would be leaving the franchise as well. The good news is that Wahlberg is staying put, but Bay's future with Paramount and "Transformers" is still under question.
In a recent interview with MTV, Wahlberg confirmed that he will be back for "Transformers 5." He also confirmed that production will pick up soon.
"Yeah, I committed to doing a couple more ... you know I can't speak for Mr. Bay, but something tells me we'll be on the set soon," he shared.
True enough, there has been no clue as to Bay's return, which is becoming worrisome for Paramount Pictures and the fans as well. Series producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is really hoping that Bay will come back for the fifth instalment. After all, Bay did say that he won't make the fourth movie, but he still did.
Meanwhile, voice actor for Optimum Prime, Peter Cullen, gave a shout out to Bay. He also wants the director to come back.
"I have a great deal of respect for him. He generates a great deal of excitement and energy. He's really a hands-on director. My son is a stunt man and worked in Chicago doing a lot of the driving sequences ... he said he's a very, very diligent, hands-on guy. He creates a great deal of energy and puts everybody on their toes. I would certainly miss him. I think he's brilliant, his mind is unbelievable," Cullen told Cinema Blend.
He added, "Michael if you're [reading] this, I certainly hope you are coming back."
"Transformers 5" is rumored for release in 2016, but as Bonaventura pointed out, nothing is concrete right now.
